Honouring the Whales
Posted by Farewell Spit Tours on 20 April 2017
Following the very sad mass whale stranding out on the spit earlier in the year a large group of locals got together on Easter Saturday to honour these beautiful sea mammals. The word was sent out through Golden Bay and the excitement began to grow - especially when Saturday dawned sunny and blue after weeks of patchy weather. A group of driftwood whales was built on Collingwood Beach, starting on the midday high tide with a blessing, and working through till dusk. The big mumma whale measured 11 metres and she was eventually accompanied by 6 younger ones and a baby. She was built facing the sea - a sign of hope and survival in to the future. The day ended with a final blessing.
